On the weekend between June 14th & 15th, Limassol once again welcomed its annual Cyprus-Russian Festival IX, in which the Andrey & Julia Dashin Foundation took an active part by supporting the festival and many of its activities, such as the 3rd Annual Painting Competition “Matreshka”. Besides becoming a charity sponsor, the Foundation also took the initiative in organizing a range of charity causes and events to fundraise for the Association of Foster Families «Folia Agapis», and support them in their important mission.
The IX Cyprus-Russian Festival took place at the Limassol Municipal Park, which opened its doors to the public on Saturday 14 June, 2014. Guests and participants of the Festival were warmly greeted with numerous fun attractions, interesting exhibitions, a variety of food and drinks, as well as a colorful concert programme, with the participation of Russian and Cypriot celebrities. The official opening ceremony of the festival was attended by the President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, as well as former Presidents Mr Demetris Christofias and Mr George Vasiliou, ministers, government officials, and many international ambassadors.
The Foundation undertook an important role and also welcomed the Festival’s youngest guests and their parents with a range of charity attractions and amusement activities, such as archery, shooting range and the unique science exhibition “Archimedes”. All proceeds from the fun activities were collected for the Association of Foster Families “Folia Agapis”. During the two day event the Foundation managed to fundraise almost 1000 euro, and expressed their gratitude to all those who came to enjoy and participate in this charitable endeavour. During the official opening ceremony of the IX Cyprus-Russian Festival, the Founders presented a cheque to the Association «Folia Agapis» in the amount of funds raised from the charity event, and generously supplemented that amount to reach 4000 euros.
Foster Families Association «Folia Agapis» began its work back in the early 90s, with the support of the Limassol Metropolis. Its objective is to improve the living conditions of children in Cyprus shelters by educating new foster families and promoting the concept of fostering. The Association believes that every child has the right to grow up in a wholesome and healthy family environment. A foster family should be a temporary home where the child can forget about its problems. Foster parents are not obliged to adopt the child, but play an important role in the child’s life. Belonging to a foster family is better than growing up in a shelter, where despite the care and love of the numerous social workers, loneliness can persist. In Cyprus, there are several shelters, and one of them is located in Limassol, opposite the church of St. Nicholas. The shelter has now become a home for some 13 children who are waiting keenly for the moment when they are finally taken into a family. Unfortunately, in Cyprus, many families fear the responsibility and are still skeptical of the idea of fostering. Folia Agapis tries to dispel doubts and encourages all families in Cyprus, regardless of their national background, to step in and offer a spark of hope to the children.

The presentation of the cheque did not call it a day for the Andrey & Julia Dashin’s Foundation at the two day fest. As the main sponsor of the 3rd Annual Competition “Matreshka” the Foundation had the honor of awarding the winners of this artistic contest with vouchers from the popular store Public, and wished creativity and fresh ideas upon them.
Overall, the event was a great success! The Cyprus-Russian Festival has indeed become a traditional celebration in Cyprus, which unites not only Cypriots and Russian-speaking residents of the island, but also many other nationalities. A unified and tolerant society is the key to the success and prosperity of the country, and the Foundation is very proud to have become part of this great cause.
